During its heyday, the Attucks was the pride of Norfolk's African American community because of its location on Church St. When it opened in 1919, it featured movies, vaudeville, and plays -- at an admission of 25 cents. While it ceased theater operations in 1955, today it stands as an important state and national landmark as the oldest remaining legitimate theatre in the nation that was completely financed, designed, constructed, and operated by African Americans.
