4 months ago The Lone Star Saloon is a historic, cash-only gay bear bar in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, opened in 1989 and now known for its diverse crowd, rotating events, and welcoming vibe. With chill yet energetic music, pool tables, and a relaxing back patio, it’s a place where community and connection thrive any night of the week. Owners Bruce and Charlie are central to that warmth—especially Charlie, whose advocacy helped reshape an upcoming bear documentary to be more inclusive—making The Lone Star Saloon less like a venue and more like a place to call home. - awesome music - cute bartenders - fun crowd
Was there when it opened
The Lone Star is the result of the earthquake in 1987. The original owner had a very small basement bar. He got a small business loan to open the Lone Star. It was my favorite bar until we moved to San Jose 1995. Met my second great Love there. 25 years ago. Bear Bar. Friendly. Laid back. time tested. It is a local bar that welcomes tourists.

Nice place to hang out. Bartenders are friendly.
What Happened?
This bar use to be fun but now it seems at 10pm every night, even the weekends it is dead. It use to be catered to the Bear community, but with most gay bars in San Fran, they try to be a bar for every type. That is a great idea in theory, but when you are in a hood with a history for a certain type of bar and crowd. When you do that you are digging your own grave I think. * * *
