Sidetrack
Dancing · Video Bar · Chicago, IL
About
Walk into a sprawling complex that feels like multiple bars under one roof. Sidetrack has been a Northalsted fixture since 1982, and the owners keep it fresh with constant updates. There's no cover charge ever, and the crowd spans 20-somethings to 40-somethings, mixing gay, straight, and trans patrons.
"It's a single venue but has at least seven or eight different bar sections, each with its own atmosphere for people-watching and socializing."
The roof bar on weekends is a must. Inside, seven or eight different bar areas let you switch the vibe without leaving. Drinks are strong and well-priced, though lines can get long. Boozy slushies are a crowd favorite. If you want to start the night with space to spread out, this is the spot.
Located in Chicago's Northalsted neighborhood, the historic center of the city's LGBTQ+ scene.

I go to Sidetrack most weekends or whenever friends visit. It's a great place to begin the night with reasonably priced, potent drinks, excellent music, and plenty of room. It's a single venue but has at least seven or eight different bar sections, each with its own atmosphere for people-watching and socializing. The crowd is a diverse mix of gay men, so you'll likely find someone you like. They never charge cover, though lines can sometimes get long but move quickly. The frozen cocktails are a bit sweet but will definitely lift your spirits.

“Disappointed”
Sidetrack has turned into a drag bar. If you want to be around twinks and their best girlfriends at a drag show, this is your spot. If you're looking for a place to meet men, go somewhere else.
